Depression & Anxiety
‘Anxiety’ is a state of mind that often consists of tension, fear,
apprehension and worry. When someone is anxious, it interferes with
their capacity to deal with certain situations and may prevent
someone from living harmoniously in their day to day life. Anxiety
may often be learned during early childhood or conditioned during
ones upbringing through a single or repeated negative experience. If
untreated, it can maximise stress (see ‘Depression and stress’),
physical ailments and lead to depression.
Anxiety can be a useful inbuilt mechanism designed to prevent us
from engaging in potentially harmful situations. Some level of
anxiety is sometimes necessary to have to increase our alertness for
certain situations, such as exams, public speaking, presentations,
etc… However, when the anxiety overwhelms the individual (often due
to a fear of ‘failure’ or negative evaluations), it disrupts the
performance and may become a problem in itself.
